Orange Is the New Black  •  By  •  0 Comments

Peter Flynn over at MoviePilot.com has combined some of our thoughts after watching season 3 of ‘Orange Is the New Black,’ the biggest one probably being “what will happen to Alex?” Season 4 should hopefully answer these for us, but that’s a year away! What are you guys looking forward to seeing in season 4?

What happened to Alex?
This is quite obviously the most pressing question fans have. One of the show’s primary characters might well be dead, the story she exists in seems not to care one bit. Much of season 3 was spent depicting Alex growing more and more paranoid at the prospect of a ruthless drug lord and former employer sending someone to whack her behind bars.

The show mostly dismissed these worries, until the very last episode, where a man managed to get through Litchfield’s very lax screening process with the supposed intention of killing Alex. What’s weird is that this was not the end of the episode. An entire ending was tacked on after it, so the show left us hanging, and doesn’t even seem to know it!

What happened to Daya’s baby?
After some of the most fascinating turns of character we’ve seen in the show, and with a particularly brilliant bait and switch on the part of Daya’s mom, the incarcerated pregnancy story ended about as badly as it could. After the baby is put into the care of the sleazy Cesar, it’s taken away by authorities during a raid by the DEA. Three seasons worth of build up, and an entire human life is simply passed off to another governmental faction. It’s a callous move that exhibits the harshness of the world. I’m only left wondering what Daya’s reaction will be, if she even finds out!

Piper’s crime syndicate
or me, Piper’s foray into organized crime was perhaps one of the weakest elements of Orange is the New Black Season 3. It manifested as little more than a joke, and when it did get serious, it only served to make Piper less sympathetic as she got Ruby Rose’s Stella sent to maximum security. This whole plot-line does however provide some interesting avenues for Piper’s character. Are we to see her descend into a system of ruthlessly gaining power in Litchfield? Judging by her brief confrontation with Gloria, probably not, yet we may still see her descend further into unsympathetic realms.

New inmates
Perhaps the most ominous moment in Orange is the New Black Season 3 was seeing the prison population be doubled, with crowds of prisoners arriving at Litchfield while the other inmates frolicked blissfully in the lake. This all suggests that our favorite characters will soon be living in much closer quarters to each other, and potential conflicts and even violence will be much easier to ignite. I’m worried that these vastly inferior living conditions we’re to see in Season 4 could render the show not fun anymore, but perhaps that’s the point. Perhaps we were always supposed to be hit by the unfunny truth of our characters’ situations.

Taylor Schilling has been rather active on Instagram over the past two weeks. She shared a photo of herself sitting with her cloes friend Carrie Brownstein‘s dog, and also advertised Carrie and Corin Tucker’s (both of rock band Sleater-Kinney) ‘Ask A Grown Woman’ video which the pair did for Rookie magazine.

Taylor also shared a shot from seeing actress (How I Met Your Mother) and singer Cristin Milioti performing live, adding that she was “bite-sized and brilliant.” The last of her Instagram posts was another advertisement for Taylor’s film ‘The Overnight.’ She said it’s still an option if you’re wanting to go out to see a film!

Taylor Schilling recently spoke to PEOPLE magazine about how her family deal with watching her steamy sex scenes on ‘Orange Is the New Black‘ and her party past.

Her sex scenes with Laura Prepon are some of the steamiest on television, so what does Taylor Schilling’s family think of Orange Is the New Black? “My family watches the show,” she tells PEOPLE in the new issue, on newsstands Friday. “They like it!”

And do they close their eyes every time she’s naked?

“Right, yeah,” she says laughing. “We don’t ever talk about that. It’s just not something that’s ever brought up. It’s funny, we just kind of don’t acknowledge it.”

“My family is awesome, though. They’ve grown with Piper [Chapman, my character]. I talked to my aunt the other day, and she said, ‘You’re so strong now!’ ”

Schilling, 30, is also receiving great reviews for her performance in the buzzy new comedy The Overnight, about two couples who venture into swinging during a drug- and alcohol-fueled evening.

The Emmy-nominated actress admits partying isn’t unfamiliar territory for her. “I’ve ended up in different states, not really knowing how it happened,” she says. “That’s something, right? Let’s be honest, it’s only like New York to New Jersey – hop, skip and a jump.”

As for any details, she says, laughing again, “I don’t know how much I want to tell you about, to be honest. We were all young once, in various states of undress, in various states, you know.”

For more on Taylor Schilling, pick up the new issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.

Taylor Schilling recently spoke to Glamour Magazine and opened up about her problems with fear and anxiety as well as which TV show she would love to guest star in.

“If I had to guest star in anything, it’d be The Fall,” she told us. “I’d love to play a villain. The writing on that show is fantastic and it really holds your attention.”

While we’d love to see Piper, sorry Schilling, give Jamie Dornan’s Paul Spector a run for his money, the actress probably has enough to be getting on with right now. As well as her ongoing role in OITNB, she currently stars in new comedy film The Overnight, alongside Jason Schwartzman and Adam Scott.

Schilling plays one half of a couple who move to LA and end up having dinner with another couple who want them to take part in some group sexual antics. The opening scene, in which Schilling’s character and her husband have the kind of sex that only comes in long term relationships, will make even the most surly of viewers laugh. It’s a definite departure from her role as Piper.

“I wasn’t specifically looking for someone different to Piper, but it’s a thrill it ended up that way, even though that wasn’t my intention,” she said. “I’m not used to the comedy world, so everyone’s ability to keep a straight face in certain scenes was amazing to me. I do a good job of that part.”

Although comedy is a new arena for Schilling, there are elements of the film that follow the same OITNB themes of self-acceptance and discovery – something that she is still seeking out in herself.

“I struggle with anxiety and fear,” she said. “Both of those things can be hard. Career success has helped, but these things are internal – the external doesn’t fix everything.”

While The Overnight is packed full of laughs, it’s also a tender look at relationships and how the successful kind develop.

“You can love someone, but some things are difficult and need to be addressed,” she said. “Deciding to expose the truth feels frightening, but that’s how things grow. As you grow as an individual, so will your relationship.”

Schilling’s ascent to stardom feels sudden, but she’s been working in acting since 2007 when she played a supporting role in independent film Dark Matter. This led to a part as a nurse in NBC TV show Mercy, before she landed a role opposite Zac Efron in The Lucky One. In 2013, she auditioned for Netflix TV show OITNB and bagged the lead of Piper, a middle class young woman who ends up in prison for a crime that happened in her long ago past. She’s a divisive character – naive and well-intentioned, but also self-absorbed and manipulative. Does Schilling herself like Piper?

“She’s trying,” she says. “She’s not stuck in her ways and she’s really looking for a way to be… She’s looking for some truths. I can relate to her; that feeling of how in these circumstances can I adjust; how can I bring more parts of myself to the table. That’s what Piper’s doing.”
Season three of the show has seen a new addition to the show – Ruby Rose, a new love interest of Piper, and a character who has attracted much attention for being everyone’s new girl crush.

“Do I fancy Ruby? Why would anyone not like her?” says Schilling. “She’s wonderful. The character is spot on and she’s really shaken up the dynamic. She’s a brilliant addition.”

There seems to be no end in sight yet for OITNB (thankfully), but Schilling has a clear idea about how she wants things to pan out for her character.

“I’d like her to find a way to live that embraces all the things that she is and that she’s becoming,” she said. “She has such a small identity when she first went to prison and I’d like her to have a bigger sense of herself and self-acceptance. Romantically, I hope that whoever she ends up with aids that process for her.”
